Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may help prevent diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
A study recently published in the Journal of Diabetes and Complications suggests that taking omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as dietary supplements may help prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
The study compared 51 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), 50 patients with T2DM only, 45 patients with NAFLD only and 42 healty individuals to examine the relationships between omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and insulin resistance.
The findings suggest, that patients with both T2DM and NFALD had worse diabetic, metabolic and liver consitions, compared to those with T2DM or NFALD alone or healty controls.
The study revealed significantly lower levels of serum omega-3 PUFAS negatively related to insulin resistance in the T2DM and NAFLD patients, compared to healthy controls.
