Key Note Launch Conference of the Healthy Clevedon project

Clevedon School, in the Victorian seaside town of Clevedon, is a secondary school with 1300 students.  The School Nutrition Action Group (SNAG) are launching a project to help not just their pupils, but the whole town of Clevedon to become a 'Healthier Eating Town', signifying a new beginning for the people of the town in the areas of food, nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

James Bowkett, Deputy Head Teacher says, "The real impact for our community will come if we can harness the enthusiasm of the children together with the resources of the community.  We can then make a real difference to the kind of food that the town offers and consumes, and persuade more people to engage in an active healthy lifestyle".

Named 'The Clevedon Challenge', the project will be launched at the school on Wednesday, 23rd March in the Main Hall at 7pm.  The Guest Speaker will be Dr Alex Richardson of Food and Behaviour Research, and senior research fellow at the University of Oxford.

All parents of children aged 4-19 have been invited, and students and staff have been visiting local shops and businesses, drumming up their support, and displaying posters throughout the town.

The evening talk is open to Clevedon residents first and foremost, but open to non-Clevedon visitors subject to availability.  Any non-Clevedon people who would be interested in getting involved or attending should check directly with the school first for ticket availability.  The number to call is 01275 876744.

There is no cost to attend this event, but we're sure that a small donation at the door would be most welcome by the school who have worked so hard to launch this worthwhile campaign.

The scope of this project is large, and will live or die by the engagement of the people of Clevedon, if a sustainable difference is to occur.  Clevedon School is working with their cluster Primary Schools and aim to engage local sports clubs, leisure facilities, businesses, supermarkets and food outlets.

During the evening launch, the school will briefly outline the scope of the current vision for the project, and guest speaker, Dr Alex Richardson, will outline her research and insights into the nutritional aspects of food and behaviour.  Dr Richardson is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences and is also the author of 'They Are What You Feed Them' which will be available for sale during the evening, or from this website.  (Proceeds to the charity FAB Research).

There will also be an opportunity to sample the nutritional and healthy, but appetising snacks, planned and produced by the students at the school, who will take pride in showing off their culinary artistic skills during the evening!
